It is usual, in popular form of music of the 20th and 21st century, from jazz to rock or reggae, to label the drummer and bassist of a group as the rhythm section. Dan Bitney and Olivia Scemama of The Bridge (see World Music Wednesday 5/1/19) will recount in sounds, words, and gestures the thousand metamorphoses of this crucial part of any orchestra. Both lifelong improvisers, the former is also one of the sound physicists of the flagship Chicago band Tortoise, and the latter has made a name for herself in France in electric and electrifying ensembles.
