Music and Dance Jam with Grupo de Tamborileros

Join the Grupo de Tamborileros de la UJAT, a group from Tabasco, Mexico, who preserve pre-hispanic musical roots of their region by teaching basic drum and flute music in this unique and fun workshop. Participants will learn techniques and patterns for playing three sizes of drums that work together in concert. These indigenous drums include the tambor grave, tambor requinto and tambor mas pequeño, which represent the low, middle and high range of the percussion ensemble. Students will also learn techniques and how to play melody on the Carrizo (a flute from Southern Mexico played for traditional dances, such as sonajeros, or rattle dances, and voladores de papantla, or dances of the flyers). Members of the Grupo de Tamborileros will assist Professor Fausto Hernández Román, Director of the Grupo de Tamborileros de la UJAT

This workshop is part of a 5-day residency with the the group, presented in
partnership with the National Museum of Mexican Art and funded through a grant from the Chicago Community Trust.
